Successful Leadership - How to Bring Out the Best in Others

If you are a leader or aspiring leader, the chances are you understand that, if you are going to achieve big results, you need to be able to bring out the best in others.

So how can you bring out the best in others?

Find out what motivates people

Go to a job interview and there is a huge possibility that you will be asked what motivates you. The trouble is interviews are often the only time people are asked this question. Imagine how different it might be if you knew what made your key people tick and kept this at the forefront of your mind. The truth is simply asking, and noting, what gets people fired up can make a huge difference.

Learn to listen

Communication is a funny area. We are all taught to speak and to write but how many of us are really skilled at listening? Too often people are more interested in getting their points across than getting results. Good leaders understand that by listening to others they don't just get insights but also get people on board with the ideas they propose.

Help others achieve

Good people have their own aspirations, desires and things that they want to achieve. Some leaders might be resistant to being too helpful to others, fearing that they might leave. The reality is that, if you are someone who has a bias for helping others achieve, you will get that returned many times over in terms of commitment and support.

Get people doing what they do best

You want to succeed - right? Well, the fastest way to do this is to do what you do best and get others to do what they do best. After all, it is much easier to bring out the best in others if they are doing what they do best.

The Bottom Line: Successful leadership depends on you bringing out the best in others. So what do you need to start paying more attention to?

Six Reasons to Work With an Executive Coach

If you are questioning the value of working with an Executive Coach, here are six reasons why coaches can accelerate your career development and leadership results.

1. A Thinking Partner - Executive coaches are outside of your organization and not caught up in the emotional dynamics at your workplace. Because of this, they can be a calm observer who can help you clarify your thinking and sharpen your perception and judgment.

2. Business Results - Provided that the Executive Coach has a background in business and organizational dynamics, they can help you to craft well thought out strategies and improve your business results. To do this, an Executive Coach will help you to clarify your goals, define the key behaviors for success, and they will help you to understand your current reality. Armed with this knowledge, you can create an action plan for closing the gap and for achieving higher levels of success.

3. Expand Your Influence at Work - Figuring out how to drive change in a business can be challenging. A skilled Executive Coach has a toolkit for helping you identify key stakeholders in the business and developing strategies for influencing them. This is not something we automatically know how to do. It is learned behavior. A coach can add value by helping you strategically decide which influence strategy is the most relevant for a business situation and they can help you to overcome and navigate negative corporate politics.

4. Career Development - There are different skills and competencies required for each level of leadership. A coach can ensure you are consciously aware of what is required for success at the next level of leadership, and work with you to systematically change your behavior and advance your career. They can also help you to identify your career goals, your preferred work style and your strengths. With this information you can carve out a work niche that is uniquely you.

5. Stress Management - When things get stressful and you are in your stress style (your habitual way of responding to stress which is counterproductive), your Executive Coach can point it out, help ground you, and help you respond to business issues and people in a proactive way, rather than react. Being reactive is usually what gets executives into trouble. They say the wrong thing in the heat of the moment, make poor decisions, and they create stress for their team.

6. Getting Your Life Back - If you are like most executives, you have too many emails and meetings and little time for the things that are important to you. An Executive Coach can help you to define your values, identify what is important to you, and help you to make shifts to your career and life which will ensure that you are healthy, and getting good results without being caught up in the rat race.

Leadership - To Lead by Example

Leadership is a very mysterious thing. Who has it, who doesn't, how can you tell, and does it really mean anything? Well, I believe it means a lot. But the truth is it only means a lot to the person who has it and exudes it. That's you.

In my opinion, it doesn't mean a hill of beans to anyone else if you have leadership qualities because "they" could care less and you almost always don't get paid more for having it. For example, no one will walk up to you and say I just noticed you have "leadership skills" based on the actions you just completed and as such you will now get paid more in life for having them.

On the other hand, if you have "leadership skills" as mentioned in this article, then over time you will reap rewards from using them because as Zig Ziglar says, "If you'll just help enough other people get what they want then you'll get what you want." The problem exists in how one defines leadership. We'll take a look at how I define it here.

You see some people mistake longevity in a position or experience with leadership. I don't agree and you can see that when elected officials are not re-elected. Why aren't they re-elected? Because they lack leadership; the true meaning of leadership; to serve others.

I was interviewed recently by a well respected organization and was asked about my leadership skills. I told them that I lead by example. Or in other words I show leadership by doing what I would expect another leader to do or that which I would expect my colleagues to do, with the exception of doing more, doing it faster, and doing it better. Things that Brian Tracy talk about. I go the extra mile, I show up on time, I encourage and lift up others and so on.

Now their meaning of leadership was different from mine. They confused leadership with influence. What they were really asking is how are you in your ability to influence and persuade people to buy into your idea or concept in order to get them to do what it is you want them to do. It's obvious that
leadership is a very misunderstood
term.

The best definition I found at Merriam-Webster was "Capacity to lead", which is quite vague if you ask me. It can fit towards my belief of what "leadership" means. But it doesn't get to the core meaning I have so I then looked up the word "lead" and it's no wonder there's so much confusion around understanding "lead" and "leadership." I found about 17 different definitions o f which I liked "to guide someone or something along the way" the best.

I see leadership as helping people do, have, or become that which they want for themselves but don't have the courage to do themselves. You see in simple terms, leadership is how well you help others that ultimately brings out the best within themselves.

Influence is often construed more negatively in that you might influence others to get your agenda completed or for personal gain. And that's okay as long as everyone benefits from the act of influencing. Unfortunately most of the time only the person doing the influencing benefits.

As you can see, its possible influencing can be either of a positive or negative nature and research shows that if you utilize positive leadership skills you'll get improved results 70% of the time over only 15% of the time when working in a negative way. And even if you are successful when negatively influencing others, they will know it and won't respect you or like you for having done so. As a result, in my mind you will have lost your ability to lead those people you are trying to be a leader to, ultimately sabotaging your efforts to lead.

Be a leader who leads by example. Do and be willing to do that which you are asking others to do and always encourage others to do things that will benefit them and you will become a meaningful leader.

Believe Yourself To Success Because Belief Equals Possibility

Things School Never Taught Us On How To Live A Better Life

Self Leadership - Are You in Charge of Your Life?

Are you running your life or is life running you? If you are not in charge and directing your life who is? In order to play the game of life we have to understand the rules of the game.

When most of us think about leadership we think of leading or being in charge of others but how are we able to do this if we are unable to lead ourselves first. Like everything in life we have to start with ourselves first before we are able to pass it on to others.

It is easy to work out if you are in charge of your life; the outer always reflects the inner

This means that everything in your life is a reflection of you and your concept or idea of what life should be.

Ask yourself these questions that will help you evaluate if you are in charge:

  • are you happy most of the time?
  • do you look after your physical body?
  • are your finances well organized?
  • is the environment you live in tidy and enjoyable to be in?
  • do you have respect and good communication in your work?
  • are your relationships loving and without game playing?
  • do you have more good days than bad days?
  • do things in your life go smoothly or is it full of drama?

"I create my world"

Everything we do is a reflection of who we are whether we like it or not. If there is an area in our lives that is not working it does not mean we are bad people or failing it just means we need to change the way we do things.

Change can only come through awareness. Unfortunately a lot of us have never been taught the skills we need as a child to be leaders of ourselves and have had no role model to see real self leadership in action. Our parents do the best they can as their parents did before them.

I have seen many people in management or leadership roles, and while they have the necessary qualifications or experience in the area that is required, they are unsuccessful in their leadership and management of others, often resulting in hostility or confusion. This is because they are playing the role of being a leader instead of realising they can only lead by example.

By making a conscious decision to change and having a plan of action that is carried out with consistency and patience you will start to recognise changes taking place. Accept that you already have everything you need on the inside to be successful.

Leadership Must Be Sensitive, Being Concerned About the Consequences and Outcomes of Decisions Made

Reputation and honour and are vital matters which should concern us all, and especially when we are thinking of others.

One of my heroes, Saul of Tarsus, who was later to be widely know as Paul was so deeply concerned about the reputation and honour of Jesus Christ that he was careful regarding what he did and what he said. As a leader, his good example to all around him would be significant.

It is not just what others may think of us. That is not all that important. But, if we are representing Jesus Christ and ambassadors for God how we live and speak must influence every area of our lives.

Such powerful moral and spiritual leadership is so needed in these days, when leaders in business and economics and banking and government have brought down corporations and financial systems, causing even sound solid banks to collapse.

Greed and corruption and selfishness and reckless ambition cause havoc and chaos. Leadership is more vital than many in positions of leadership realise. Bad leadership results in disasters of different types.

Paul was concerned that what he did was right in the eyes of God, and he was equally concerned that what he did was right in the eyes of men. Although being on trial for his faith and frequently thrown into prison, what he did was right and proper. It is always better to be correct than merely politically correct.

He considered others and he considered what the outcome might be for others by what he preached and taught and wrote.

If our business leaders had considered for a brief moment the consequences of some of the decisions made over these past four or five years in particular we might not be in the chaotic and dire and painful circumstances which many find themselves in today and through no fault of their own. That is tragic.

We need able and capable but sensitive leadership and such leadership is a scarce commodity in our world. Do people really want able and capable and sensitive leadership, or are they satisfied to just muddle along.

Biblical leadership involves biblical principles and that might reveal and bring to the surface too much sin! But biblical leadership will honour the name of God and will not take the take of the Lord God in vain and will respect Jesus Christ who came to rescue us out of all our various messes.

There was a notice in the shop of a godly businessman which read, 'Nothing dishonourable before the Lord or before man shall be done by me today'.

If that were to be on the walls of our main businesses and corporations and governmental departments what a lot of suffering and sadness and embarrassment and heartache might be prevented. If that was on the wall of every Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, and in each boardroom there could be economic revival within a few weeks!

There are times when we not only listen to Almighty God, but we have to listen to the advice of others, and that might surprisingly be prophetic.

God strengthens those whose hearts are fully committed to Him, and there are situation too when people must be able to see our good deeds and integrity and honesty, not for show nor for boasting, but for a witness to the risen and living Lord Jesus Christ who has changed and transformed us and brought about a new creation with new attitudes and values and standards.

This Leader Who Started in Such a Lowly and Humble Manner Rose to Become King in His Nation!

France and Italy have been knocked out of the 2010 World cup tournament in South Africa, in the first round. There are always shocks and there are always disappointments, no matter which sport you play, and of course, it applies not only to sport but to every area of life. This is where leadership is so important. How do we recover from shocks and disappointment?
Many years ago there was a man called Ernst Willimowski who played for Poland. He scored four goals in one match against brazil of all teams, and yet Poland lost five six! On that day Willimowski excelled as an individual but that was not enough to enable his team to win the match.
Soccer is a team game and if the team is not good enough then it matters not how brilliant one individual performance may be on the day.
Life is like this too, and in business this is crucial, and it works the other way too. Some individuals in the banking and financial and commercial world have acted and behaved extremely irresponsibly bring down not only their bank of corporation but the whole economy.
Writing as disciple of Jesus Christ and a student of the Bible I turned to these verses in the book of I Samuel and considered that account of David and Goliath.
Goliath was a giant with a huge spear and he unwisely challenged Israel to come and fight. It is never wise to issue a challenge to the people of God.
Young David came along with food for his brothers who were in the Israeli army under the leadership of King Saul. David was a shepherd boy. No amount of training in this area of warfare could have enabled him to defeat Goliath.
He took five stones and with his skill as a sling shooter he slew Goliath with his first stone. Goliath died and I do not think he ever thought such a thing would enter his head. David had four more stones and it has often been wondered if these were in case Goliath's four brothers appeared. Yes, he did have four brothers. Check it out.
David's strength in one sense lay in what he said. "Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?"
David knew that the living God was with him and that God is active and mighty and able and powerful, and that Almighty God can use a man who goes out to serve in His holy name. David also knew that as he served God in this way no one could defeat him.
He would soon be on the throne of the nation of Israel, giving the most powerful leadership, but note carefully as to how it is began. It started in a very humble and lowly but highly significant way.
This young shepherd boy who was trained in the wilderness of Judea and who had fought against bears and lions, knew what he was doing and he knew whom he was serving, and yes, there were bears and lions in that jungle area some three thousand years ago.
When we are confronted by giants and when gigantic problems face us we need the supernatural help of the living God. Never be ashamed to ask Him and call upon His name. The risen and living Lord Jesus Christ is more than willing to help those who ask and who go on asking for his divine help.
Whatever the problem is that is confronting you, consider this powerful example of dependent leadership and triumph and overcome and be victorious.

Identifying Your Business Team Member's Personality Colors

Being a business team leader can be a very daunting task. Almost always you will find that your team consists of very diverse individuals. As a team leader it is your responsibility to motivate your team members towards a common goal. This can be very difficult when your team members each have their very own strengths, weaknesses and conflicts. In this article we will discuss how to recognize the four main personality types by color so that you can better understand the needs of your team members on an individual basis.

As a leader you will quickly notice how well your team works together once you have identified the individual strengths of each team member. Also, by recognizing each individual's strengths you will know which task they will naturally do well in. This will lead to better delegation on your part which will ultimately build a stronger, more efficient, stream lined team. You will also find that you are able to communicate better once you recognize each team member's needs, work ethics and values. Your team members will notice the change in how you are leading them and in turn be even more motivated to reach their goals.

Below is a short overview of the four main personality colors Orange, Blue, Gold and Green. Each color will be listed with the working styles, personality types and values attributed to it.

The Orange personality works well with other people in a healthy team work environment encouraging competition and camaraderie. They are very creative and highly energetic and do well with action oriented tasks. They love having the freedom to use their skills and show off their abilities. An Orange personality does have a difficult time dealing with too much structure or management. They tend to feel blocked and have a difficult time functioning if they feel they are being micro-managed. Time consuming and prolonged administrative tasks can difficult for the Orange where they may feel impatient and bored.

The Blue personality is a very social type. They love making friends and having a strong social network is very important to them. This makes them very good at building relationships with clients, customers, coworkers and employers. The Blue personality can be very sensitive to conflicts or strong competition but will thrive in any positive, service orientated atmosphere.

The Gold personality is a very serious individual and is so with their work responsibilities. They like to be part of a successful and productive team where they can continually contribute. They love receiving rewards, incentives and positive recognition. The Gold personality tends to need a great deal of structure where time lines should be enforced and expectations made very clear. They look to their leaders for constant reassurance on how well they are doing.

A Green personality lacks in people skills. They love facts, data, research, and anything analytical. You will find that they are almost always seen as an expert in whatever interests them. Most of those interests will be complex systems, data analysis, statistics, or design. The Green personality's weakness can be the lack of follow through and tend to be quite rude in some social scenes.

By recognizing the personality colors of each of your team members you will have the ability to meld your team into a well coordinated, unified group. Your leadership skills will shine as you delegate tasks to each team member according to their strengths and expertise. Remember, a well harmonized team is a team made for nothing but success.

The World Cup Soccer Tournament and Life's Surprises Have Much in Common Presenting Many Challenges

The World Cup, that football or soccer tournament, is full of surprises. It is like life in many ways, because life is so full of surprises, no matter where you are or what your circumstances are.

Some teams can do very well when they appear in these competitions and others who thought they could do well find that the reality is quite different.

Eight years ago there were many people shocked when South Korea managed to defeat Spain, Italy and Portugal, to reach the semi-finals. Not people would have thought of South Korea as one of the semi-finalists.

Did they have a secret? There are suggestions that it was all down to the training! It has been said that the South Korea squad spent more time than any other in training and preparation through various practices matches. They knew the secret of hard work as they strived towards their goal of scoring goals.

The quality of motivating leadership must have been important in that squad.

Training and preparation are vital if we want success. The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary!

If man will put in all this effort for a game, what ought we be to be investing in as we prepare for the game of life? That most powerful and anointed man of God, Paul, wrote in his letter to young Pastor Timothy that physical training is good but training for godliness is much better. That gives the promise not simply of a mere trophy but indicates various benefits in this life and also in the life to come.

In other words, Paul is indicating and showing us and all of mankind what is really worthwhile.

Now, here is a leader who took leadership to a higher and deeper dimension.

When a man follows Jesus Christ, the risen and living Son of God, that man is on to a winner.

I continue to enjoy going out jogging and running and exercising but I am also seeking to prepare for when this physical life is all over down here.

As we train to be godly through reading the Bible and prayer, we begin to reflect something of the character of Almighty God in our own lives. God calls us to live for Him and to shun and avoid the temptations around us which can lead us astray. Although I value physical training, this type of training is much more valuable.

The efforts of the South Korean soccer squad are to be admired and appreciated and commended, but outside the world of sport and football, their training really runs out of uses, in a sense.

Go for godliness. Be as active as you physically can, but choose to be a man or woman who reads and studies the bible which is the Word of God, and make that determined effort to pray. Prayer is hard work.

Writing is comparatively easy. Reading and studying the Bible is comparatively easy. Prayer is hard work, but always remember that the rewards of godly living yield eternal benefits and blessings, as well as a sense of physical well-being at present.

This Leader Demonstrates No Dry Doctrine - Here We See Leadership Filled With Life, Love and Power

My former Professor of New Testament at The University of Edinburgh in Scotland, James S. Stewart, spoke much about being 'in Christ'. It was a phrase he would use frequently in his sermons, talks and lectures.

It is only over these recent weeks that I have been seriously reconsidering the significance of this powerful concept. It is a phrase used frequently by the apostle Paul when he is writing his letter to various church and individuals. 'In Christ' and its close equivalent 'in the Lord' flow from Paul's quill. One scholar has recounted that Paul uses these words some one hundred and sixty four times. It is as if he just could not stop using these words. They were so relevant and meaningful to this man of God, and of course, they are profound.

That is where we as disciples of Jesus Christ should live: 'in Christ'! that is some address to have!

It was not that Paul lacked words to use because his writing is of a high literary standard. This phrase meant so much to him. For years, he had been out of Christ and even had opposed Christ and those who followed Christ, and then Jesus Christ found him and confronted him and rescued him and saved him.

Saul of Tarsus, who later became Paul, was 'born again' and became such a powerful leader and preacher and teacher and writer. He did much travelling too founding churches all over the Middle East, and his motivation and inspiration as a leader sprung from where he lived: 'in Christ'. That is no empty sentiment. For those of us who are disciples of Jesus and who follow Christ is a most meaningful phrase.

Paul writes that we are sanctified in Christ Jesus. That means that we are set apart, or made holy, or different. Because we have been 'born again' and as a result of becoming a 'new creation', we are different that can have its own set of issues and problems. Some people do not like those who are different, and perhaps that is one of the reasons why there is so much persecution of believers in Jesus around the world today.

Believers in Christ Jesus are justified which means they are delivered from the penalty of sin, and they are also sanctified which involves being delivered from the power and pollution of sin.

This is not dry theology. This is life and inspiration for every Christian leader.

At a time when strong moral spiritual leadership is so greatly needed, let this phrase inspire and encourage you wherever you are. Study the letters of Paul and find these phrases for yourself and understand their profound meaning and significance, and may they enable you to remain faithful to Jesus in these perilous times.

There is a dynamic when a man realises that he is in Christ. He is in God, the Son. This is no dry doctrinal belief. This is life and love and power and anointing for service.

Arise and Become a Leader Who Will Give Moral and Spiritual Leadership in a Day of Shady Dealings

When Almighty God created this world everything was created through the Word, and john explains to us and teaches in the Gospel which bares his name that that Word was the Son of God, who became Jesus Christ.

The New Testament speaks about man becoming a new creation and it is Jesus Christ who is involved again. Jesus spoke about this in that profound conversation he held with Nicodemus. It is wise to read and study this.

The more we read the Bible, the more we see and understand that God does nothing except through Jesus Christ. Jesus is unique. There is no leader comes near him in leadership.

Which leader can offer 'new birth' and make a man a new creation and forgive sin, and then give direction and guidance for the rest of his life along with equipping and anointing power? In Jesus Christ we have unique leadership with qualities and characteristics that affect and influence every area of life, and these are so necessary.

In Jesus Christ, God was reconciling the world to Himself, and God is so willing to help us in all our problems and difficulties and the challenges which confront us in life.

In a world where we are witnessing so much greed and corruption at all levels, but particularly in governmental and leadership positions, we need to know that there is a leader who can deliver and release us from all this.

Corrupt leaders motivated by selfishness and driven on by sin will be found and discovered one day. There is nothing surer. God has said in his word, "Behold your sins will find you out". This is much more than a man's sins being discovered and uncovered and found out. He is found out! He is discovered and revealed.

Many in the business and economic and financial world have found that to be so very true over these three or four years. Man cannot run away and hide from what God has said. If only those in business and banking leadership had paid closer attention to what God had said it would have saved them and their families from so much heartache.

In Jesus Christ we see service and serving combined with compassion and self-sacrifice and love. This requires strong leadership. Jesus was no wimp. Jesus Christ was the very opposite.

It takes real manliness to follow Jesus Christ because it can involve challenging sin in the lives of those who think they are so clever and so powerful and so influential.

Introducing Almighty God and Jesus Christ into some conversations today can give rise to a wave of embarrassment or even laughter and ridicule.

God is concerned that we be saved and rescued from all these unnecessary problems and painful conflicts.

Can you be a reconciler? Do you have the strong leadership qualities required to reverse what has been going on over these past years, particularly in the banking and financial world, where the love of money has become a powerful evil root?

Just as God loved unfaithful Israel, he loves those who have made such a mess of things and caused others such appalling suffering.

Can you arise and become a leader who reconciles where there is conflict and give moral and spiritual light where there has been the darkness of highly shady dealings?

Can you? Will you?

Developing the Leader Within You

The Way To Achieve Success With Virtually Any Opportunity Is simply Being Able To Lead Other People Successfully.

Now have you ever in your life noticed or read about a leader that misled people who had been following him or her? Have you at any time had someone (possibly a salesperson) make you promises which had been misleading? Whenever we've been misled, it can be difficult to trust and follow without questioning. However, if we all follow a leader that leads successfully with integrity, many of us will follow that leader anywhere!

Here Is An Important Story Regarding Abram and Sarah On How God Promises To Never Mislead Us

One day God called Abram to leave his home because God planned to utilize Abram to create a new nation. God instructed him, "Follow me, and I will reveal to you a new country. Your new name is Abraham. This new land will belong to you as well as your children plus your children's children. You'll be the father of a nation with more descendants than stars within the skies and grains of fine sand on the shoreline."

It was extremely hard to believe! Why? Abraham had been an old man - one hundred years old! He and his wife, Sarah, who was ninety years old, had no children. Exactly how could God make such a promise? The truth is, the instant Sarah heard it, she laughed.

Yet, God said, "Why is Sarah laughing? There is nothing too hard for me!"

In fact, one full year later, Sarah gave birth to Isaac. God fulfilled his promise to Abraham and Sarah. By means of two unbelieving children, God created a nation.

What's God's promise for you personally that you've not yet seen fulfilled? Have you already been tempted to question if God misled you or perhaps you heard him wrong? You might have actually given all of your current energy and faith to some venture primarily to discover it in no way come to fruition. And as a result you question yourself, God, or possibly both. For that reason, it's difficult to trust his promises and step out in faith again.

However God never misleads! You have stumbled upon a bend in the road, not the end in the road.

A young lady who dreamed of being a pediatrician, who worked for a long time to enter medical school, seen that dream come to a screeching halt. For a long time she thought, I must have misunderstood God. And yet thirty years later, soon after raising a family and fulfilling a teaching credential as well as an administrative credential, she discovered she could possibly still earn her doctorate. it wouldn't end up being a pediatric degree, by which she could save the physical lives of children. Instead, it would be a doctorate in education. Applying her abilities to write Sunday school curriculum, she discovered she had been applying this doctorate degree to save lots of the spiritual lives of children. An infinitely more commendable calling, she realized.

God has promised he has a wonderful plan for our lives, for good and not for evil, to give us a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11). This promise will never be misleading. god will never lead us down the wrong path to tease us with a false hope. You can have confidence in him to keep his word, regardless of how hopeless your life might appear today. It doesn't matter how challenging your circumstances, God will never leave you. He will walk with you and guide you if you enable him. He will never ever allow one step be wasted.

There are no missteps for those of you that follow God!

Empower Yourself With the Permission to Lead

At a recent gathering of a regional leadership forum we were challenged over the 2 days with dynamic principles regarding our personal journeys to becoming effective and fulfilled leaders. After a light evening meal on the second day we were turned loose to walk the resort's nature trails with a single question to ponder: What internal battles do leaders face that make it difficult to lead? The point of the query was to get us prepared, open-minded and ready to re-think some of the ways we'd been carrying out our leadership lifestyle.

A short time later every one of us was seated around several of the large fire pits situated in a clearing in the pine woods. I thought it interesting that the speaker chose to stand at a bit of a distance from the fire pits, where most of us couldn't see her, either because our backs were to her or the brightness of the fire in the fire pit diminished our ability to see into the dark. Her goal was to allow our minds to focus on the principles and nothing else while the dancing flames in the fire pits served as visual "white noise" to block out distractions.

The single principle she communicated to us was this: leaders who effectively empower others must first empower themselves. They must give themselves permission to lead. She explained that those with leadership abilities need to use those talents to serve the good of others and of the organization. She asked us to write the word "reluctance" on a piece of paper, crumble it up and toss it into the consuming blaze in the fire pits. She explained that when leadership is viewed as a form of service the leader will have the right attitude and will not be as hesitant to lead.

It isn't that leaders have the authority to tell others what to do. It is that leaders have the responsibility to direct others toward the fulfillment of important individual tasks which lead to positive outcomes for the whole. Leaders lead she said over and over, and I contemplated this simple but important truth as I gazed at the fire pit's glowing embers. Leaders lead just as writers write, designers design and sales people sell. It is their duty and responsibility to the team to lead. Reluctant leaders are non-leaders. Self-empowered leaders who are respectful, encouraging, full of vision and highly competent are effective leaders. We concluded our session around the fire pits by jotting down 3-5 action points that would make help us implement this principle going forward.

In my leadership life this principle has made tough calls easier to make, since someone has to do it and that someone is me! The principle has increased my motivation and I am now a much better motivator too. Take a few moments today to relate this principle to your own leadership lifestyle and you'll likely become a more effective and more fulfilled leader.

6 Success Tips to Kickstart Your Leadership Development

Key Components to Developing Leadership Skills:
Leadership development is the actual in-thing within business circles. This is understandable because great leadership is often the key factor great business success, Bill Gates and Bill Gates being two illustrative examples of what superior leadership can do for companies. There's a surplus of training programs out there that emphasize leadership development and it may get confusing for anyone. It can also get quite costly if you are not certain about what sort of program you're searching for. If you're part of a business the price is most likely not a problem, but if you are not or are already at the top and have tight finances, it can be a pain to increase funds yourself.

Not to worry, leadership development can also be done on your own. Most programs give bang for their buck by providing additional services but, at its core, a leadership development program is about self-improvement. All that is required for self-improvement is a willingness to change and a guide to get you commenced and what you need when you are working on your leadership skills is a plan. So, here's a few tips on starting your own leadership development plan:

1) Make Objectives - Whenever you're starting something, it's always good to know what you're aiming for. A plan is like a road map and if you don't know your destination, then you will likely wind up not knowing where you are on the way. The question is is what should your goals be? Try to select an ambition for your professional life - how you want to wind up and where do you want to be in a given amount of time. Try to set an ambition for yourself that is both attainable and reasonable. Nothing discourages more than failing a plan. Be sure and consider your time table and what is truly possible given your circumstances.

2) Have A Reason - You probably have a driving force for doing all of this. Don't forget that objectives are not reasons; reasons are what drive you towards an ambition and not the goal itself. It can be difficult to differentiate the two but it is essential to know precisely why you want something; is it personal pride or something more. Stupid reasons give you stupid goals; reevaluate what goals you have after you've determined what's driving you towards them. A key contributor to many leaders in their development process is learning to to clearly see the end result on a daily basis and use their reason that drives them as a reminder. Take some time each day to focus in your head on what you need to accomplish to reach the desired destination.

3) Assess Yourself And Identify What You Need To Change - Take a look at yourself. What are your personality traits? What skills do you hold? What personal weaknesses do you possess? It is very important that you be truthful with yourself in this part - which is why most leadership development programs have counselors to assist you at this stage; they're not exactly necessary, but they help cut through all the excuses and justifications that you make for yourself. Look at your ambitions and view yourself - what traits and skills can help you reach those goals? What weaknesses will handicap you? What do you ought to do change yourself to be in a position to reach your ambitions?

4) Give Up to Go Up-  Most all of us have some type of restraining behavior that will hold us back from getting more out of our time. Identify what may be holding you back and make a commitment to disengage in fruitless behavior. Yes, we all need to let go and relax our minds and enjoy life, but really consider if what you spend your time on is counter-productive and limiting you from achieving your 'reason'. The key thing is to, find a balance.

5) Invest in Yourself Just a Little to Go Far- It can be very worth your while to find some inexpensive resources that will help you stay focused and even motivated. There are a lot of helpful types of motivational resources that can aide in keeping your mind focused on what your daily achievements need to be to be more productive.

6) Put The Plan In Action - Get off your derriere and do what needs to get done. I find it very advantageous to have an allotted time each day for certain activities. You will here it time and time again that, "Consistency is truly the key", to successful leadership development.
This may all may seem simple, but trust me, it is likely going to be the most difficult thing you've ever done. Leadership development is not a cakewalk but if you manage to do it, you'll be rewarded well in the end and furthermore.
