Leadership Success - What Separates the Best From the Rest

Being a leader is hugely challenging and at the same time hugely rewarding. While many leaders do an okay job, others do an exceptional one. So what is it that separates the best leaders from the rest?

Clarity

In my experience, the best leaders have clarity about what they want to achieve personally and for the organisations that they lead. Those that I have had the pleasure to work with who excelled were crystal clear about what they were trying to achieve.

Passion

The best leaders that I have come across are generally passionate about what they do. Rather than seeing it as a job or career, it is in many ways their core purpose. This level of passion and desire is what drives them on, even when the going gets tough.

Team Players

Great leaders really get the feel that anything of significance can only be achieved by teams of people. I know all of the major successes that I had when I worked in big organisations came about when teams of people were all working together to achieve a common outcome.

Big People People

Logic and how smart you are will get you so far. How far you go and how successful you are is very much down to your ability to get the best from others. In a nutshell, that means you need to be a huge people person and be able to build relationships at all levels.

Courage

Make no mistake; you will be faced with plenty of decisions as a leader. The best leaders understand that this goes with the territory and have the courage to make and then implement the tough decisions, even when they might be unpopular.

The Bottom Line: Leadership success does not come with a guarantee. So what do you need to focus on to be one of the best leaders?
